Culture: What It Takes to Work in Social Media

So, you want to work in social media? We’re probably biased, but we think it’s the best industry out there. Before you start applying to agencies, here are the crucial skills you’ll need in the ever-changing world of social media:

The foundation:

You need to be an imaginative writer. There’s a good chance you’ll be writing for multiple brands in different voices to an array of audiences, often in the same morning. It’s not for everyone; it takes creativity, perseverance and a fresh perspective.

You must have time management + project management skills. We’re up to our ears in content; photos, videos, GIFs, copy, and everything else required to make a social post stand out. You name it, we create it—as well as edit, manage, publish and moderate it in various formats for our clients. Other things that might be thrown in your schedule? Managing campaigns, emails, approvals, brainstorms, proposals, contracts, timelines, vendor agencies, partnerships, and more. Overwhelmed yet? Knowing how to manage your time is essential, and knowing how to manage multiple projects at once is critical.

Social media professionals are detail oriented. As an agency, we’re in the relationship business; our clients mean everything to us. Going above and beyond to make sure every last question is answered and post prepared is key to maintaining our strong connections both in and out of the office.

You have to be flexible. Things change, and, in the world of social media, they change quickly. It’s important to be able to bend when working in this fast-paced environment.

Finally, being curious about the world around you is vital when working in an industry that is constantly evolving. Since social is often the entry point for breaking news, staying on top of current events, tech trends and cultural phenomenons is a big part of the job. If there’s a weird new cat meme, you need to know what it means!

An understanding of the bigger picture:

Do you understand the principles of marketing? Do you have a grasp on brand strategy?  How about the fundamentals of business strategy? Do you have a global perspective? Are you analytical? What do you know about media buying? Do you know how to conduct data-driven research and integrate insights to inform a strategy?

Plus, you need to be good with numbers, as every social media campaign involves reporting to measure its success, by evaluating key metrics like engagement, reach, and return on investment

Social media goes beyond eye-catching Instagram photos or intriguing Facebook post—it has fundamentally changed the way the world communicates and operates. Understanding these changes is paramount when navigating the opportunities businesses could have in this medium.
