TL;DR: It’s been two years since the outcry when Snapchat replaced replaced the Best Friends List with Friend Emojis and it can still unclear what each emoji means. Not to worry though: Here's the Snapchat Friend Emoji Playbook to clear up any confusion so you never lose a Snapstreak.

Gone are the days where we could secretly look at our peers' top friends on Snapchat with the Friend Emojis that have taken its place. Implemented in 2015, Friend Emojis have started a competitive nature within users with constant vying to be No. 1 best friends, year-long Snapstreaks and devastation when a streak ends.  Snapchat continues to add more Friend Emojis and it can be confusing as to what each emoji next to your friend’s names represents.

Our Snapchat Friend Emoji Playbook breaks down the meaning behind each emoji.

🌟 Gold Star: Someone else has screenshotted their snap in the last 24 hours.

✨ Sparkles: This indicates that this a group chat to keep you up to date.

👶 Baby: A new friend and haven’t snapped them yet.

😎 Face with Sunglasses: The mutual friend emoji. You both have the same person in your best friends.

😬 Grimacing Face: You and this person have the same No. 1 best friend. Awkward.

😏 Smirking Face: Looks like this friendship is a one-way street. You’re in their best friends, but they’re not in yours.

😊 Smiling Face: You’re both on each others best friends. You snap each other a lot.

💛 Yellow Heart: You’ve both snap each other more than anyone else lately. You’re now each others No. 1 best friend. Keep going for the red heart.

❤️ Red Heart: Two weeks and going strong. You have been No. 1 best friends with this person for two weeks now.

💕 Pink Hearts: This person is your ride or die. You’ve been No. 1 best friends for two months straight.

🔥 Fire: You’re on a Snapstreak. You’ve snapped each other multiple days in a row. This will always be accompanied by the number of days your Snapstreak has.

💯 Hundred: 100 day Snapstreak! You’ve snapped each other over 100 days in a row. That’s commitment.

⌛ Hourglass: You’ve been slacking on snapping this person today. Hurry up and snap them before your Snapstreak ends.

🎂 Birthday Cake: It’s this friend’s birthday. This is another platform to help you remember your friends' birthdays.

You can customize your own Friend Emojis in your preferences and turn that yellow heart into a pizza emoji if you want.

You may also see different emojis next to your favorite celebrities. This is basically Snapchat’s equivalent to the blue checkmark on Twitter to show that this user is verified. This emoji represents the public figure, like Michelle Obama (💁🏾‍♀️) and DJ Khalid (🔑 "Major key alert!")

While Friend Emojis don’t directly impact brands Sparkloft believes Snapchat is still a useful platform for brands if done right.

Friend Emojis are a way for Snapchat to encourage users to increase daily usage of the app by fear of losing a Snapstreak or losing a best friend. With Instagram Stories surpassing Snapchat with 200 million daily users compared to Snapchat’s 160 million, Friend Emojis might not be enough to bring those numbers back up.
