We won’t spend much time making decisive predictions about VR, the metaverse, or the next big Web3 platform. With numerous possibilities ahead, it would be irresponsible to use this space to fantasize about how new tech will be used if the infrastructure and audience doesn’t realistically exist yet.
We’re naturally skeptical of declarations like this. In a moment of great change and uncertainty, hyping up any one technology as the inevitable path of the future is often a sign that someone is personally invested in its success.
More importantly, fixating on a specific technology in this way can distract from what makes it significant in the first place. After all, those who benefit most from disruption aren’t always the disruptors themselves. Breaking the rules isn’t enough — the winners are the ones who understand why the broken rules matter.
That’s the kind of thinking we’re after. This report is a hunt for the insights that will guide our future. What rules does new technology allow us to break? What makes that disruption appealing to real people? How have they historically behaved when faced with similar changes?
